Wine Quality We go that extra mile

In fact we go 250,000 miles each year to bring you the best wines worldwide.

Chablis Quartet CollectionEach year we carefully taste and choose the barrels and tanks of wine that will go into each of our wines. So all our wines are exclusive to Marks & Spencer, you can’t buy them anywhere else. You may see a Chablis but it won’t be the same wine inside the bottle.

We visit all the wineries and build up personal relationships with the winemakers to craft styles of wine, which please our customers and respect the provenance of the wine region.

We also agree the treatment of the wine to ensure that where possible it is suitable for vegetarians. We encourage the winemakers to use only limited other ingredients and ensure it contains no genetically modified ingredients.

The bottles all carry the vegetarian V to indicate when they are suitable for vegetarians.

We also agree the type of cork and bottles used.

We print on the label if the bottle contains a natural or synthetic cork so you can choose what your wine is bottled with.

We taste every wine as it arrives in the UK to ensure it is as the winemaker and we blended and bottled. That is a lot of sniffing, swilling and spitting.

As we only sell our own brand we can ensure every bottle of the 400 still sparkling and fortified wines comes to you in perfect condition.

We will not buy wine because it cheap.

We carefully control the amount we buy and the stocks of all wines to ensure we are only selling products in prime condition. We agree with the wineries when the wines should be bottled and delivered.

For the young fruity wines we ensure they are sold within the year of their vintage allowing the next years fresh wine to reach you before anyone else. We label the new vintage white wines with a logo so you will know they are the freshest.

For wines that require some time in bottle we hold the stock back and put it into stores when it is ready for drinking so you should never get a tough tannic bottle of wine. In some cases we may be selecting wines 3 to 5 years ahead of when they will be sold. These wines will be reserved for us.

We have a passion for every product we choose and take the same care for a £2.99 bottle of House Wine or a £30 bottle of Champagne.

And because we support sensible drinking we label the units of alcohol in a glass on each bottle.
