Vote here to Stop the Clocks

Are you for or against stopping the annual ‘Spring forward fall back’ clock change?

The core arguments For and Against fixing our clocks permanently to British Summer Time (BST) are listed below:

For

Book cover of Saving The Daylight by David Prerau
  • Quality of life: Lighter evenings would be a bonus to millions of workers who currently see very little daylight during the winter.
  • Reduces Britain’s carbon footprint: Darker evenings cause domestic consumers to generate millions of tons of CO2 whilst darker mornings would not increase energy consumption as much as a higher proportion of the population would still be asleep before the sun rose. During the second world war Britain conserved energy in this way.
  • Reduces road accidents: Maintaining BST year round would decrease the time spent driving in the dark which is estimated to cause 104 deaths and 450 serious injuries a year.
  • Business ease: Fixing our time zone would leave us on a time parity with Europe, making life easier for many businesses.

Against

  • Quality of life: Darker Mornings/Lighter Evenings would cause disruption to certain sectors such as School Children and Postal Workers whilst leaving many areas of Scotland in darkness until around 9:00 AM.
  • Increases road accidents: The decrease in road deaths and accidents in the evening would be at least partially offset by a predicted increase in road accidents in the morning.
