In 1868 G.A. Serlachius founded a groundwood factory in Mänttä in Central Finland. The paper mill was completed in 1881. Metsäliitto Cooperative was established as a wood exporting company in 1934.
Metsä-Serla Oy was established as a result of the merger between Metsäliiton Teollisuus Oy (industrial branch of Metsäliitto Cooperative) and G.A. Serlachius Oy in 1986. At the time of the merger the two companies’ pulp and paper assets were of similar size. Metsä-Botnia became a subsidiary of Metsä-Serla.
The 1990s were a period of extensive growth. Metsä-Serla acquired Holmen Hygiene in 1989. The business operations of UK Paper Plc. were purchased at the end of 1998. The deal included the Sittingbourne and New Thames paper mills. The owner base of Metsä-Botnia widened with the acquisition of Kemi Oy 1990, Metsä-Botnia became again a subsidiary of Metsä-Serla in 1995. Acquisition of Kyro paperboard mill took place in 1995. Papierfabrik Biberist in Switzerland and Simpele paperboard and paper mill in Finland were acquired in 1997. Metsä-Botnia acquired Joutseno pulp mill 1997. Metsä Tissue acquired two German tissue mills in 1998 (Halstrick and Strepp) and a majority in a Polish mill (ZPK) in 2002.
Metsä-Serla acquired Modo Paper in 2000 and Zanders Feinpapiere AG in 2001. Metsä-Serla changed its name to M-real Corporation in 2001.
