How the humble pencil for cosmetic surgeons led to the pencil technology of the future
Although primarily a pen manufacturer, not many people know that STABILO helped change the face of the cosmetics industry quite by accident in 1927 by creating the first dedicated eyebrow pencil and eyeliner. The technology it pioneered spawned the creation of a new company dedicated to make up: Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics, and today it works with firms such as Estée Lauder, Avon, L’Oreal, Chanel, Body Shop and Revlon to name but a few!
STABILO’s place in history began with the creation of a special pencil for use by surgeons to draw incision lines on a patient’s skin before an operation. Realising that this pencil had the ideal qualities for a pencil to define eyebrows, they made a shorter version that was perfect to slip into handbags. Plucking your eyebrows and wearing kohl around the eyes had suddenly become the ‘look’ of the moment, the company picked up on the trend towards wearing make up and began to supply cosmetics to meet this ever-increasing demand.
The rest is history. Schwan-STABILO went on to develop a number of other successful products which are used by millions of women around the world every day and eventually split their writing instruments and cosmetic manufacturing business in two - creating Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics and STABILO.
As much at the forefront of new make-up technology today as it was in 1927, Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics has a decisive influence on the cosmetics sector. STABILO has in turn capitalised on the knowledge it has gained from the research and expertise which Schwan-STABILO Cosmetics shares on a regular basis, ensuring STABILO pens are not the most cutting edge in terms of the technology and innovation they incorporate, but are also ultra stylish, reflecting key influences, fashions as well as the season’s latest colours.
