Sellotape’s branding

Sellotape’s Biography Go back to profile

Thanks for sticking with Sellotape

Henkel constantly strives to create products that make people’s lives ‘easier, better, and more beautiful’.

70 years ago Colin Kininmonth and George Gray coated a cellophane film with a natural rubber resin to create a product that we still know and use today — Sellotape!

Not only is Sellotape Original Britain’s stickiest tape, it’s unique because it’s made using Cellulose film, a material derived from wood pulp which is sourced from managed forests. Cellulose is biodegradable, so better for the environment, its natural properties make it easy to tear by hand and it’s anti-static — so no tangles.

Today, Sellotape products are highly popular and are used extensively in homes and offices worldwide. Such is the brand’s success that the word ‘Sellotape’ has been synonymous with clear adhesive tape for generations. Furthermore, the product even has its own entry in the Oxford English Dictionary!
